Reva 12,13,14/05/2005

ISdAC present at REVA 2005

From Thursday 12th until Saturday 14th of May ISdAC was present for the second time at the REVA fair in Flanders Expo Ghent.
Because both our organisation as well as WAI-NOT are working around the same theme and we have been in touch with each other for some time now, we decided to share a mutual stand with both organisations. Whereas WAI-NOT would provide information on the possibilities that the Information and Communication technology offers to people with a intellectual disability, ISdAC would draw attention to the importance of an accessible Internet for all people with a disability. This cooperation was a succes and certainly worth repeating.

On the occasion of this fair, and by means of a text browser, users could experience for themselves the consequences of the inaccessibility of a website for people with a visual disability. Regarding the accessibility problems for people with an auditive, physical and intellectual disability we made the visitors aware of some points of attention. From the reactions we got it was clear that quite often people are not aware of the accessibility problem. Sensibilisation in this regard will certainly be needed. Therefore it is our intention to find out in what way our organisation can contribute to this process.

By means of a short inquiry we checked with people with a disability how they experience the accessibility of the Internet. Furthermore we did an inquiry amongst the non-disabled visitors on how they experience the accessibility of the Internet. Do they too experience some kind of inaccessibility and do they feel it's important to have an accesible internet for people with a disability? You will find the results of this inquiry on our website soon.

Once again we established some interesting contacts during this edition of the REVA fair and hope we will be able to extend them in the future. We are already looking forward to REVA 2007 and hope that by then we will be a little closer to achievng an accesible information society for everyone.
