Projects

Part of ISdAC’s mission is to demonstrate the expertise of disabled people with regards to Information Society Technologies. That makes our organization a valuable partner in any ICT-related project aiming at incorporating user feedback in the research process.

BenToWeb (FP6-IST-BenToWeb)Link to BenToWeb Website

BenToWeb (Benchmarking Tools for the Web) is a European project that aims to support the public and private sector with the implementation of the guidelines issued by the eEurope 2005 Action Plan. It is the intention of the project to extend the support in existing tools for the accessibility guidelines issued by the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

BenToWeb aims to:
  • Support the WAI with the development of a second version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.
  • Expand the existing standards and methods with relation to user friendliness, so the accessibility can be taken along.
  • Develop API's for Evaluation & Repair Tools that enable end users to develop test procedures and complementary tests at its own size.
  • Investigate if it's manageable to develop test procedures for automatic testing of accessibility aspects in the field of colour contrast, colour blindness and Low Vision.
  • Use modern language technologies from computer linguistics in the development of control mechanisms on syntactic- semantic level.
ISdAC's primary task in this regard is providing a test user panel of people with a disability in order to test the tools developed within the project, and to gather information concerning web accessibility issues.

IRIS (IST-2000-26211)

The IRIS project aims at improving the accessibility for all users to online services in the areas of telework, online learning and e-commerce, as well as other websites. This is done by :

  • Checking existing services by means of extensive user testing in order to collect the requirements for accessibility, and improve their functionality afterwards.
  • Developing a Design Support Environment (DSE) that will support and assist webdesigners wanting to build accessible webpages or improve their existing ones, as well as anyone wanting to learn about Design for All.

For both, ISdAC is providing disabled experts in order to test the accessibility of the working environment.

For more information about IRIS project, please visit the project website.

IPCA (IST-2001-37370)

IPCA-project aims at developing a new intelligent mechanism (mouse emulator) that will allow people with severe physical and speech disabilities to control standard, and especially web-based applications.

Within this project, ISdAC is responsible for setting up a user test site in Belgium and The Netherlands, in order to investigate the usability of this new product.

IDCNet (IST-2001-38786)

IDCNet aims at gathering information on Design for All (DfA), as well as investigate the needs from industry and academia in this regard, in order to be able to compose Design for All curricula. These will be used during the education of engineers and designers and for dissemination activities towards educational institutes. Furthermore, the project aims at setting up a European DfA network, this way gathering all relevant information and supporting the foreseen European Network of Centers of Excellence on Design for All, following the eEurope objectives.
